The GIS and Space blog shortly discuss RadiusIM, a new player in the field of geographical instant messaging. Here's the company website. From the blog: "The premise is that you can see others in your area (the mapping component is Google Maps), and IM them. As you change your map extent, the list of potential IM candidates changes accordingly. [...] You can use the radiusIM chat client to chat with your buddies on GoogleTalk/Jabber, MSN Messenger, Yahoo! Messenger, and AOL Instant Messenger. I did test this out and it works pretty well." Spatially Adjusted wrote about it faster than I: there's an interesting thread on the Geowanking list about GeoChatting. Here's the Jabber XML schemas available for the User Geolocation protocol. We covered ESRI's GeoChat previously and Spatially Adjusted links to a GeoChat blog.

Bingo, yet another way to meet new people from all over the world."

The new Shortcuts lets you do all this without ever having to leave your message or open a new browser window."
Industry: Location Aware Chat

Mark writes "Mapable Technologies has launched a new site with the goal "to place common social activities on a map". The first service is Mapable Chat. The service is free of charge and sponsored by advertisements. Anyone can create a chatroom or join an existing chatroom. Each chatroom has a map associated with it and when you create a chatroom, you can configure the map to set its initial position, zoom, etc. When a user joins a chatroom he gets a marker on the map identifying user's location. Any message a user sends to the chatroom is shown in a bubble popping out from the user's marker. Here's an example of a chatroom dedicated to Slashgeo.org." Mapable features are listed below.
Twitter and Mapping Social Messaging 1 comment

The Brain off blog has a nice summary of the social messaging tool Twitter and mapping. From the blog: "What Twitter has done is opened a platform for lightweight mobile social messaging, that can possibly be overloaded and extended with new services. There have been numerous projects out there for location based social networking (dodgeball, plazes, many others) but nothing has caught on, for various reasons. [...] SMS is one of the very least communication infrastructures that can be relied on in a disaster zone .. certainly it would be available before internet access and the power that requires. Twitter turns SMS into a social networking platform, and I could definitely see some version of that being utilised, especially with location folded in." This post from the Data Mining blog adds info about GeoRSS feed for such social messaging tools.
