The useful EVS-Islands blog discuss the creation of a global land-water mask in vector format (screenshots included). From the blog: "Regular readers know that I am a long time user of World Vector Shorelines (WVS). These vectors cover the world at a scale of 1:250,000. If you download them, you will see that they are not polygons, but line files. I have always wanted to create a land-mask of all land areas within this database, but have never had the time, software or computer calculating power. That was until yesterday. [...] I let my reader know that the 1-kilometer global land-sea mask he currently was using was, probably, the best going. He knew of the Globcover LULC 300-meter grid cell version coming out in the first part of February 2008 to be created and made available by ESA. [...] Using a simple routine within the digitizing tools, I created polygons from lines." Mr. Minton's new dataset is freely available from the blog entry. The topic of world shorelines datasets was previously discussed here over a year ago.

The EVS-Islands blog discuss and links to freely available world shorelines datasets. From the blog: "After a preliminary look, I can confidently state that PGS is a major improvement over WVS. At 1:250,000, PGS shows a different shoreline than WVS shorelines. At larger scales (1:25,000) they show a shoreline that is very close to Landsat-7 imagery, whereas WVS is clunky and coarse." In direct relation to yesterday's story, Mr Minton writes "Seems lots of GIS'ers from around the world are interested in my newly fashioned Global GSHHS Land Mask. I initially made this file available for download in ASCII XYZ format at this link. Since then I have received a number of requests to make the data available in SHP format. Follow this link and you can download the Global GSHHS Land Mask (66MBs) in SHP format."
GlobCover Global 300m LULC Update
[+]
Via AGISRS, here's two updates on the GlobCover dataset which provides free 300m-resolution land-use land-cover of global coverage. We discussed GlobCover about a year ago, the source data is not available but should be this coming July. You can browse the whole world GlobCover LULC data using the tool in the links above. From the ESA article: "Earth’s land cover has been charted from space before, but this map, which will be made available to the public upon its completion in July, has a resolution 10 times sharper than any of its predecessors.
Scientists, who will use the data to plot worldwide land-cover trends, study natural and managed ecosystems and to model climate change extent and impacts, are hailing the product – generated under the ESA-initiated GlobCover project – as 'a milestone.'"
