Street View on steroids

Christian Spanring's blog has an entry in it with nothing but a link to this interesting use of a panoramic camera. It looks like they captured live action 360 degree panorama movies, and playing them back in a flash control (using papervision 3D engine). The result is a movie where you can see the action from any angle. Pretty neat, give it a go with the link from his website.

Earthmine: Digitizing the Streets with NASA Tech [+]
Anonymous Voxel writes "From O'Reilly Radar: "The online mapping space continues its march towards 3D and startup Earthmine is at the forefront. Earthmine has developed technology that enables them to get high-resolution 3D geo-imagery quickly. They've developed a street-level camera system that enables them to capture 3D data for each pixel. Yesterday Earthmine announced that they have exclusive access to the same NASA technology that is used on the Mars Rover. The technology comes from NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. As a part of the deal CalTech will take an equity stake in Earthmine."" Earthmine was introduced here in early October, but has been enhanced since then. Slashdot also has a discussion on this technology used by the Mars rover to make better maps. In geoblogs, the latest VerySpatial podcast talk about it and Ogle Earth discuss it and share a video.

I saw a 360 video a while ago. Attached to a street luge it had sound too so you could hear the crowd fade in and out as you shot passed them, and they were louder if you looked in their direction.

They have something similar in there with the football scene. I don't know think it had 3D sound, but this could be a new form of video viewing. Of course it would be nice if movies could come like this, but I see it being a huge pain for special effects, now that every possible angle has to be covered.

At least CG movies can take advantage of this tech, and produce films which provide a massive experience to the user, in that they can explore the movie from any angle.
